Internship DescriptionRachel Mitchell- Fall/ Spring 2015
The Lincoln Recreation Center offers a wide variety of amenities and services aimed at improving the quality of life of College Station residents. Residents can take advantage of services in the areas of youth programming, senior services, special events, and community outreach. The facility includes a gymnasium, game room, fitness room, multipurpose room, zero depth water park, and a 13,000 square foot covered pavilion. As a intern at the Lincoln center I work mostly as a mentor for the children. My main responsibility at the Lincoln center is to help provide life skills, basketball techniques, and most importantly be a positive force for the children. Each week I work with two sets of age groups (teens, k-2) on life skills and techniques. On Wednesday's I work with the teens in my personal program PMP (Positive Movement Program) and go over Life and its challenges while providing a judgment free environment. I also take this group on field trips to provide versatility in learning environments. Thursdays I work with K-2nd girls on basketball skills and also provide different learning environments. Requirements and Qualifications To be a mentor at the Lincoln center you must apply by filling out an application. Be sure to list your qualifications and what you would like to do at the center. There is some training you will have to take as well as safety classes if you are new to children. Most importantly have an agenda. Be sure to know what you would like to do for the children and stick with it. Benefits and Opportunities The benefits from working at the Lincoln center as a mentor are endless. Being able to provide and guide children to a more positive life is priceless. Employment pay is $7.25 a hr for mentoring; volunteers are not paid during internship or volunteer work. Achievements As of today I am now working with the youth in a program created by me. The purpose of this program is to provide guidance, life skills and lessons. I have learned so much by working with youth. Patience is key. |
